quotes Think your best bet is just to scrap away the wet mud and see what's underneath.. if it looks like nice dry mud, which it should be seeing as the mud your using looks rather clay like? water tends to sit ontop of the clay because the clays particles stick together (unlike sand which drains away better than clay) so there should be some alright none sinky mud underneath, just sprinkle some mud over the top to stop any sinking and prepare for the next time it rains.. that's your best bet really. If all else fails your last resort i guess would be to put some hardboard over the sinky shit, but that sorta sucks.. so avoid doing that :P. Hope that helps bro.
